Faux'dmaps: AppleTV (and iTunes)

We're introducing a new pseudo-regular feature here at Packet Switched Press: The Faux'dmap.

With the rise of all things Fake in the blogosphere (Fake Steve Jobs blog, Fake Hillary blog, Engadget's Keepin' it Real Fake), we feel obligated to--dare we say left with no choice, but to--join the movement in lemming-like, entirely un-original, bandwagon-hopping fashion.

And so, the Faux'dmap, entirely fake "roadmaps" for popular products and services from companies that make good link-bait for our up-and-coming island in the hinterland'ish tide-pools of the D-list blogging ghetto.

Up first, the product with the most coverage in the past week: AppleTV and associated iTunes features (click to enlarge).

Some highlights...
  • Intros:
    • AppleTV "Pod" ($349, Q4'07): iPod/iPhone dock, DVR (iP* auto-sync), web browser, games, widgets
    • AppleTV "nano" ($99, 1H'08): no HDD, portable, follow-me forwarding

  • Evolution:
    • 2g and 3g AppleTV ($199, Q4'07; $149 Q4'08):
    • 2g AppleTV "Pod" ($299, Q4'08): Place-shifting (to PCs and iPhone)

  • iTunes:
    • New content: High Def titles
    • New features ('07): On-the-fly anything-to-MP4 transcode, movie rentals, proprietary, automatically-managed AppleTV P2P network for distribution
    • New features ('08): Legal DVD ripping ($4.99, locked to household), digital rights assignment/trading market
Enjoy!
